The history of Derby Cathedral falls three distinct phases: The period from 943 until 1549 when it was a collegiate church serving a religious community; the period from 1549, when the college was dissolved and the building became a parish church, which it remained until 1927; and from 1927 when the current diocese of Derby was created and the building became what it is today, a cathedral.
